    is or are?

    Large amounts of rice _________ taken from the country by railway.

    "is" or "are" in the blank? Thanks!

    Because amounts is plural are is correct. But you could also say "A large amount of rice is taken ..." and it would mean exactly the same.

    By the way, I think it better to say "by rail" than "by railway."

    Some people would use a comma. Personally I try to use commas only when they are undoubtedly necessarily.
