Question about the verb ''to say''

How may I identify the correct preposition to use after the verb? As in the sentence: ''He didn't say another word on the subject as they went upstairs to bed.'' a first-look at it, and I thought something was wrong because of the use of ''on'' instead of ''about''. Do you have any tip to help me on this matter? Thank you.

It's fine. In the context "on" means "about".
