    Specialize in...?

    Hello,

is it possible to say this "company specializes in the Chinese market"
or the word "specialize" is used only when we are speaking about industry (specializes in financial services etc.)?

    Thank you!

I find that quite unnatural. I might say "It's a specialist in the Chinese market" or "It concentrates on the Chinese market". We don't only use "specialise in" when talking about industry, but we do normally follow it with a subject or a product.

My friend is a history teacher, specialising in late 19th century Austrian history.
Her company make cakes and they specialise in wedding cakes.

    Re: Specialize in...?

You might specialize in aerospace parts, but you don't specialize in a market or country. You would be focused or centered on a particular market or country.

    Re: Specialize in...?

    See:
specialize in - definition of specialize in by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

    Specialize in: verb
concentrate on, focus on, centre on, zero in on (informal) a Portuguese restaurant which specializes in seafood

As an NES but not a teacher, I may be wrong, but I would personally have no problem with a company that "concentrated on, focused on or was centred on the Chinese market".
