...Traffic systems are constantly shifting between ordered and disordered behavior as time evolves, just like all complex systems...

In the sentence above, what does "time evolves" mean? Does it simply mean "as time goes by"?

Apparently. Time doesn't evolve. Time marches on.

I must agree with the recent reply in saying that we do not use the word connection "time evolves". Instead, I would say: as time passes by.

Could anyone share a few other alternatives with me? I look for phrases and word connections that collocate with one another and express the passing of time.
