    Press The Pace

I looked up the phrase "press the pace", but couldn't find a definition:

"In the fifth round, Williams protested to the referee, Rudy Battle, that Czyz had butted him when he emerged from an exchange at close quarters with a cut on his right brow. After a quiet fifth round, Williams pressed the pace and outpunched Czyz as the fighters stood shoulder to shoulder."

    What is "press the pace"?
