The only time you would use the 's' on mother is the plural, such as mothers-in-law or likewise attorneys general, or sergeants major.

It is 'mothers'-in-law if you want to talk about more than one mother-in-law i.e. there are several mothers-in-law here today. If it is a question of posession then you would use mother-in-law's, i.e my mother-in-law's dress.

i think mother in low never takes S , even if it wants to mention s.th that belongs to a mother in law

    Re: Problems with a mother-in-law

Then how would you denote the plural or possesive? Being an English noun it has to undergo the English inflection for these things: My mother-in-law's party; All the mothers-in-law in the world.

    quite right jane.

    mother-in-law singular
mothers-in-law plural (though most people would write/say mother-in-laws)
    mothers-in-law's plural possessive
    mother-in-law's singular possessive
