What is the subject of the sentence? What role does "but" play here?

The subject is 'Everyone'; 'but' is a preposition.

    Let's consider another example:

    1) It's a secret between he and I.
    2) It's a secret between he and me.
    3) It's a secret between him and I.
    4) It's a secret between him and me.

Which do you think is correct?
    I am not a teacher.

Really? I went with he to the party?

No, prepositions are followed by the object form of the pronoun.

So, it's: Everyone but him likes ...

Re: Everyone but him / he likes basketball.

I went with he to the party? I see, 'with' is a preposition, so with him.

'but' is a preposition, so but him.

    Thanks, again 5jj.

Re: Everyone but him / he likes basketball.

It has become all too common to hear "between you and I" and other such mistakes.
