Birds can signal one another of their species to warn of danger or appeal for mating.

    Dear all,

Birds can signal one another of their species to warn of danger or appeal for mating.

Regarding the sentence above, I think there are two possible interpretations.

#1 Birds can signal one another of their species to warn of danger or to appeal for mating.

#2 Birds can signal one another of their species to warn of danger or they can appeal for mating.

Which do you thinkn is correct?

    Thank you!

    OP

    Hello.
I'd go for the first one.

#2 Birds can signal one another of their species to warn of danger or they can appeal for mating.
Why, please? Does that mean we need parallelism in both parts of the aforementioned sentence?

Re: Birds can signal one another of their species to warn of danger or appeal for mat

The sense of the sentence is mentioning two possibilities for a bird signaling: to sound an alarm and to attract potential mates. The second sentence suggests that they signal for alarm and do something else for mating.
