I'd say, "the volume of sales and returns". Of course, the best thing to do would be to find out exactly what the conflict was about, and report that. It might even involve costs and revenue.

The amount of sales is the sum of money earned from sales, while the number of sales is probably the number of sales transactions, or less likely, the number of items sold. The latter is moke likely if all the items sold are identical.
