    the remainder

    Hi teachers,

If you subtract 5 from 3, what's the remainder? Is it correct?

    Many thanks.

    Re: the remainder

    I'm sorry. I couldn't understand you.

If you subtract 5 from 3, the remainder is 2. Is it also correct?

    No, 3 - 5 = -2.
    I am not a teacher.

No, -2 is called the "difference". Remainders occur in division. If you divide 7 by 2, you get 3 with a remainder of 1.

    Re: the remainder

You can also say, "If you subtract 3 from 5, what's left?" (in BrE, at least).

If you subtract 3 from 5, you're left with 2.
    5 minus 3 is 2.
    5 minus 3 leaves 2.
    5 take away 3 is/leaves 2.
    3 from 5 is/leaves 2.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
