heart disease / a skin disease

    Hi,

I am wondering how you tell when 'disease' takes an article or not.

'Heart disease' seems to be more popular than 'a heart disease'.

But 'a skin disease' would be more used than 'skin disease'.

What difference do you see between them?

    Thanks in advance.

    (Not a Teacher)

It depends on the context. For example:
"Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the US."
    "Atherosclerosis is a heart disease."
    "Skin disease afflicts millions worldwide."
"Acne is a common skin disease."

Also note that you will hear 'cardiovascular disease' fairly frequently as well. This is the more scholarly term for this class of disease. As for skin disease, I think there is 'dermatological disease', but I don't think that's particularly common outside of certain circles.

Re: heart disease / a skin disease

Also, most people don't know much about types of heart disease, so they are happy with "He has heart disease".
But there are many different skin diseases that people know: acne, scabies, psoriasis, leprosy, eczema ... (and you can see them, and some are contagious), so saying "He has skin disease" would leave most people wanting more information.
