    yet already in reported speech

    Hi,

    A: I haven't bought the car yet.
B: She said that she handn't bought the car yet.

A: I have already done my homework.
B: She said that she had already done her homework.

Can I turn the present perfect tense into the past perfect tense in a reported speech when using in the sentence 'yet' or 'already' ?

    Thanks.

Re: yet already in reported speech

Doing it with already is fine. To my ear, doing it with yet sounds funny (possibly because it results in ambiguity - although the ambiguity is rarely if ever actually confusing). I don't know whether this is a rule, but it's a prohibition that many speakers observe. Many don't though.

Re: yet already in reported speech

Thanks for the answer, but I have seen that some internet sites have used 'yet' in reported speech. This is why I have asked you. I don't understand why they use even if it is a mistake.

    - 'My husband hasn't booked the hotel yet'. Mrs Taylor said that.

Mrs Taylor said that her husband hadn't booked the hotel yet.

Re: yet already in reported speech

'Mrs Taylor said that her husband hadn't booked the hotel yet' sounds just fine to me.

If we move 'yet', nobody would demur, I imagine.

'Mrs Taylor said that her husband hadn't yet booked the hotel.'
