I don't understand the following expression in red. Is that correct?

Hour after hour, he rode on, his chin of his breast, lost in speculation, submerged is despair.

I think it might be "his chin on his breast (chest)". Put your chin on your chest* and imagine feeling submerged in despair - you'll probably get it.

PS: This is anatomically impossible for most people, but you lower you head as far as you can. You don't have the psychological strength even to hold your head up.

It looks like a typo for 'his chin on his breast'.
