    When his wife

Please would you take a look at these two sentences and correct them.

    1. When his wife became critically ill he was helpless, and could only pray that a wonder would happen, and she would become healthy again.
    2. He went to his GP, who in turn referred him to an orthopedist.

    Re: When his wife

We usually pray for a miracle, not a wonder.

As an AmE speaker (according to your profile) where did you ever read/hear that the term "wonder" would be used in the context you posted?
