I am confused a little bit, they both sound correct. What is the difference between them?

What I want to use this sentence for is a movie review: The movie is about a magician who performs a number of tricks in a small town and we see his tricks unfold/unfolding through the film ..

Are you talking about "unfold" and "unfolding". I don't find much difference between them and either could work, in my opinion.

I used "do" because it's a general verb to make my question clearer in the title. It's the exact same thing, it's not the verb I'm asking about!

The best way to indicate that is to write "to seem them xxxx or to see them xxxx-ing".

If it's any help, my flatmate (an ex-magician) said that he would only refer to "performing tricks/effects".

"We saw him perform tricks" and "We saw him performing tricks" are both correct.
