Like he "adopted" the role, but it sounds weird,
I want to say he was really into the character, he wore the character, he became the character ...

& I want to use it in this sentence

"the movie didn't give the actor a chance to ______ his role" ?
I need one verb in the gap that'll work.

For the first one, I would write "He actually became the character".

For the second, one could choose "perfect", "highlight", "emphasize".

I like emsr2d2's "inhabit".

I'm glad to hear that. I was rather proud of it and it's my favourite! ;-)

I am not as fond of "inhabit". I am not sure one can inhabit a role.

In a slightly earlier era we used to say interpret rather than inhabit the character. To me that seems to better characterise the process of acting.
