What verb can I use for an actor who played a part of a movie very well ?

Like he "adopted" the role, but it sounds weird,
I want to say he was really into the character, he wore the character, he became the character ...


& I want to use it in this sentence

"the movie didn't give the actor a chance to ______ his role" ?
I need one verb in the gap that'll work.

For the first one, I would write "He actually became the character".

For the second, one could choose "perfect", "highlight", "emphasize".

... as does my cousin, who is an actress by profession. It is deemed the height of praise to be told that you completely inhabited your role.

OK, thanks. A new one for me. There may be a bit of an AmE versus BrE difference. The same Google query (USA) returned only 57,000 hits versus your 8,600,000.

In a slightly earlier era we used to say interpret rather than inhabit the character. To me that seems to better characterise the process of acting.
