    Can I delete this?

    Hi~

I have a question about this sentence.

"Thanks to the man who had packed Plumb's parachute during the war, Charles Plumb could survive."

    Can I omit 'had' ?

If I can, is there any difference between two sectences( one with had, the other without had)?

    Please let me know.

It's from one of my English workbooks.
Why? Is there any problem with the sentence?

I find it a bit unnatural. This is better: "Thanks to the man who (had) packed Plumb's parachute during the war, Charles Plumb survived." The "had" is not really necessary but it's OK. Even then I find "during the war" to be a bit odd.

    Thanks for your answer.
By the way, what do you mean "during the war" is a bit odd?

It suggests to me that the same man packed Plumb's parachute throughout the duration of the war, and that Plumb needed to use it several times.
