A boy and a girl are sitting together and talking to each other. The boy asks the girl "how do I look to you?". Is it correct? He is asking her about his look. If it's correct, can I also use "seem"?
A Word A Day:
The answer to that would be something like "You look very nice" or "You look very smart. I like your new trousers". It doesn't mean the same as "How do I seem to you?" The likely answer to that would be something like "You seem very happy" or "You seem very intelligent".
"How do I look?" is one of those questions which perhaps doesn't mean what it sounds like it means. It means "Give me your opinion on my appearance". When a woman asks her boyfriend/husband "How do I look?", he needs to be very careful with his answer!
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
