    niceness

    Hello everyone.
What means this word? In what situations I can use it? Can I write it in official documents or it's a slang like "wanna", "gonna" and etc?

    The context:

Columbus came ashore greeted with nothing but niceness.

I have a thought: When Columbus came ashore, the people, who lived there, met him with love and respect.

But I do not think that it's right idea.

    Thanks.
    Nickle.
If I have made any mistakes, please tell me about them. I need to improve my English anyway and I hope you'll help me.

    Have you consulted a dictionary?

    Re: niceness

My dictionary (I use ABBYY Lingvo it's a online dictionary) tells me:
"niceness nice|ness noun [mass noun] the quality of being nice; pleasantness
example: her sheer niceness won her many friends"

But I find this description poor and very abstract, therefore I have created the topic.

    Re: niceness

    How is it abstract?

Happiness: the quality or emotion of being happy.
Greenness: the quality of being green in colour.
Niceness: the quality of being nice.

Do you have a problem with understanding the adjective "nice"?
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Re: niceness

There's nothing abstract about that definition. 'Niceness' is the noun from 'nice'. 'Niceness' is rarely used, because 'nice' itself has a broad, non-specific meaning. I suggest you use something more specific in formal writing.

    Re: niceness

    Thanks for help.

I think I was confused, because in my language there isn't "nice" as a noun.

"Nice" isn't a noun, it's an adjective. "Niceness" is a noun.
