I can't find the meaning of the following sentence in read in any dictionary:

Arthur: Did they actually asked if you'd had killed someone?
Beca: Yes
Arthur fought off a grin.
Arthur: What did you say?
Beca: I said 'no', of course.

It means he tried not to grin, probably because he didn't believe the accusation.

Are you sure it was written like that in the dictionary, or is it your typo?
