doing it again/doing it all again

1-He thought he was doing something very original. Then he thought that maybe it had already been done before. Was he doing it again?

It was the first time he was doing it even it had been done before by others. But it seems to me that the sentences both work.

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

The way I read it, the question would refer to his usually thinking too much, ie he usually thought something positive about himself/his work, and later his spirits would sink in a sea of doubts.

I guess there is a better way to hit the idea home:

He thought he was doing something very original. Then he thought that maybe it had already been done before. Was he (really) the first one to attempt something like that?
