how od I get an answer to this question

I'm helping one of my students with essay writing and exam preparation. He wants to know how to stress a word in writing. I know that if one is using a computer, one could italicize it, but how does one emphasize a word in writing? In searching for the answer, I've read that one should underline such a word but I'm wondering if there are other ways to show emphasis...somehow, underlining the word doesn't seem quite right to me. I tend to want to put quotation marks around it!

Please help! All and any input much appreciated!

Underlining is the correct way to stress a word in handwriting. Quoting the word is definitely wrong.

    Welcome to the forums, Ron.

    Raymott is correct.

Informally (not in an exam), a stressed word could be capitalised.

Please note that a better title would have been 'Showing stress in writing'.
