    Her figure was slim

Please would you take a look at these sentences and correct my mistakes.

    1. Her figure was slim and her face without wrinkles, and I wondered if this was as a result of her genes or some kind of surgery.

I also wonder if I could use the word "thanks to" instead and write:

    2. Her figure was slim and her face without wrinkles, and I wondered if this was thanks to her genes or some kind of surgery.

    Re: Her figure was slim

(I removed the "as". It sounds better to me that way).

    2. Her figure was slim and her face without wrinkles, and I wondered if this was thanks to her genes or some kind of surgery.
    (This sounds good to me).

    Re: Her figure was slim

This is one of those times when you want "whether" instead of "if." Is it 1) genes, or 2) surgery?
I wondered whether it was 1 or 2. Those are my two choices.
If you wonder IF it's 1 or 2, the grammatical inference is that "genes or surgery" could be a cause, but so could some other thing not mentioned.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
