'The truth is (that) I didn’t finish my term essay.'

Could 'that' be omitted?

Thanks!

It can but, in speech, there would be a pause after the word "is". If I had to write it, I would probably write "The truth is ... I didn't finish my essay" or "The truth is - I didn't finish my essay".

Yes, a pause, or a similarly interpreted intonation that prolongs the verb into 3 "musical notes."

I was told that 'that' can't be omitted in predicative clause, except in spoken English.

Thanks!
