It was me who... or it was I who...

Hi All, is it correct to say: "it was me who did something" or "it was I who did something"? Thanks.

A stickler for grammar would prefer "it was I", but as you know from listening to people in America talk, "it was me" is more commonly used than "it was I." Therefore "it was me" must be considered correct, at least in speech. I would reserve "it was I" for formal writing.

Leaving the grammar disagreement aside, I am not fond of that construction. Why not just say "I did something" or if you need emphasis, "I was the one who did something"?
