    as far as

"As far as a mainstream consumer product, this just isn't something anybody needs," said Sam Biddle, who writes for Gizmodo.com.

What does "as far as" mean? Is it short for "as far as ....is concerned"? Is it naturally used here?

    Thanks!

Yes, it is used correctly. You are right by using "concerned". Here is an example "This new machine can make bottles, but only if they are at least four foot high, put the labels on, and fill the bottles. The fact is that nobody needs this type of machine".

I don't find it at all natural.

    Re: as far as

I believe it's wrong. To me, acceptable versions would be, "As far as being a mainstream product [is concerned], ..."; "As far as it being a mainstream product, ..." or perhaps "As far as mainstream products go, ...". The original seems to be missing something.

I agree with you, but I think the original needs less: As a mainstream consumer product, this just isn't something anybody needs," said Sam Biddle, who writes for Gizmodo.com.
