Note that a better title would have been 'The couple was great friends'.

I found this in a newspaper. "The couple was great friends". Is this sentence grammatically correct?

Even though "couple" is a singular noun, it is clear in this use that it refers to two people. Therefore, a plural verb is a better choice.
