He is riding an elephant on its back.

He is riding an elephant on its back.

    Is the sentence grammatical/correct?

    Thanks.

I understand what this means, but a comical image comes to mind -- the elephant being on its back.

I would just simply say: He is riding an elephant. There is no other way to do that.

It's not a natural sentence but there is more than one way to ride an elephant. One can be in a "howdah" on the animal's back or astride its neck in the fashion of a mahout.
