    It is correct, although to my ears it sounds like an old western movie, like "they called him The Kid... Billy The Kid."

    In AE, I've always said/heard something like the following:

    Do you know that girl?
    I don't know her, but I know of her - her name's Annie. (you heavily stress the word 'of')
    -or-
    I don't know her, but I know who she is - her name's Annie.

    (not a teacher, just a language lover)
