The not unjustified attacks on Pope’s edition of Shakespeare, especially those by the learned Shakespeare scholar LewisTheobald, led to Thepbald’s appearance as king of dunces in The Dunciad. In this poem Pope stigmatized his literary enemies as agents of all that he disliked.

Hello teachers,

I know the meanings of each word but I can’t understand the blue part as a whole.
Would you please clarify it to me?

Many thanks in advance.

Pope took revenge on Theobald by writing a satirical poem entitled The Dunciad, and including in it a character, the king of dunces, who was named Theobald.
