[Idiom] Is "run a red light " an idiom?

I read the following dialogue which I think is quite weird.

  • Look! Some people are running the red lights.
  • We should wait although others are breaking the rule.
I don't think the sentence "Some people are running the red lights" is correct.Suppose there is scene: There is the red light, but we still run across the road without stopping. We can't say "we are running the red light", right? I wonder whether "run a red light" is an idiom?

To run a red light means to drive a car through an intersection while the light is red. It does not refer to the actions of pedestrians.

E.g. "The preacher said 'You always have the Lord by your side' so I ran ten red lights in His honour." Mick Jagger
