    One auxiliary at a time

    Hello!

I was once asked why we can't use do, does and did with modals like can and could. I said that they are all auxiliaries and that we use one at a time.

I believe it is correct (please tell me if it's not!) but I also believe one could add info to the explanation. Is there anythinig else to be said about it?

    Cheers,
    Tito

How would one combine a "do" and a "can"? "I did drink a case of beer" and "I can drink a case of beer" are separate ideas.
