    why past tense here?

I've got a guy on my staff who got hit
in the head with a glass door Thursday.
    His forehead wouldn't stop bleeding,
but he wouldn't go to a doctor
    'cause I got another guy
who got beat up covering Cairo.
And the first guy wouldn't see a doctor
until the second guy saw a doctor. (from US, TV sitcom Newsroom)

Hi, I can't understand why 'saw' is there. If I use 'see' would it be wrong?

    Thanks.

    The following are correct:
    1. "The first guy wouldn't see a doctor until the second guy saw a doctor".
    2. "The first guy won't see a doctor until the second guy sees a doctor". (Of course, 'see' is not right.)
Given that the narration is the the past tense, I wonder why you'd want to use 2.
