Smile looking at me looking at them lookin at me

Hello. I don't quite understand the last two lines.
Is it just a repetition to emphasize the situation?
(These sentences are from a children's graphic novel, <Jane, the fox and me> The speaker is a bullied girl.)
--- I get down on one knee in the sand
and pretend to tie my shoe
so I don't have to look at the others
looking at me looking at them
    looking at me
    .

Re: looking at me looking at them lookin at me

I think this just describes the following:
The others are looking at the girl and she's also looking at them. So she's looking at them to see that they are looking at her and they see in turn that she's looking at them at the same time. This is a bit messy but I hope this helps.
    (I am not a teacher.)

    not a teacher

If, as you say, the girl is being bullied, then she is probably very sensitive about being looked at. I think the way it is written emphasizes that not only doesn't she want to be looked at, but she doesn't want to be caught looking at anybody who is looking at her. Perhaps she is worried that they will see her discomfort and this will make her vulnerable to more unwanted attention.
