    "would"

"Why would you make up a story like that?"
"I was afraid my mom would get angry, so I told a lie."

Hi. What is the meaning of would here?
If I say 'why did you make up a story like that?' it would have a difference?

    Re: "would"

When I say 'why did you...' I just want to know the reasons. When I say 'why would you...' I am somehow more interested to know about the frame of mind
you were in - the reasoning behind making up such a story. The inclusion of 'would' makes the question somehow more psychological, I think.

One of my English friends said:
"I think there are a number of possible interpretations.
If would is stressed, and if the lie was in fact told, it might be an example of the use of will to express insistence in defiance of authority, logic, morality etc. He will/would walk in puddles when I tell/told him not to. I would lie, even though it was my mother.

In contrast, we sometimes say Why would? in cases where we don't know whether the event happened, and here the sense may be conditional. Fred was there around that time so it might have been him who did it. But why would he do it? He would do it if he were afraid."
