    two questions concerning 'should'

    1. 'We had to wait another hour then, until the guard should raise the signal.' Could 'raised' be used instead of 'should raise'? Also does using 'should rise' imply that it had been used to be that way and therefore, probably, that is the way it would happen in the future?
Also does using 'should rise' imply sth 'special', let's say?

    (Not a Teacher)

Yes, the simple past tense would suffice. "Should raise" has no 'special' meaning to my knowledge. I'm not entirely certain how "should" is being used here, so I'll leave that to the teachers.
