    papal spanking

    Hi

What does the following sentence mean?
"Like all good unorthodoxies, pantheism drew a sound papal spanking, this one from Pius IXs 1864 Syllabus of Errors."

It means that Pope Pius gave pantheism a verbal lashing in the quoted work.

    Re: papal spanking

This reminds me of a definition that has now been removed from SOED.

Abbreviator: papal official who draws up the Pope's briefs.

But as MikeNY said, the 'papal spanking' here is a tongue-lashing given by the Pope.
