A bet is a wager. A bid is a proposal to buy or sell something. Not really related at all.

vasea, any dictionary would have made clear the difference between 'bid' and 'bet'.

 Also, place/bid isn't nearly as strong a collocation as place/bet. BNC has 20 for place collocating with bet. It reports 15 cases of place/bid colllocations, but nearly all of them are 'bid for a place' (where bid is a verb and place is a noun) - so the fault is in my search! The COCA numbers are clearer: 87 vs 19. Typically, you make a bid.
