    is known as ??

California is also known as the Golden State because of all of the gold that was found in this area. Why the word after 'is' is not 'knowing' but 'known'? Is simple present continuous in this sentence?

    Re: is known as ??

Does "California is also called the Golden State..." help clarify?
Please be aware that I'm neither a native English speaker nor a teacher.

I'm not a teacher nor a native speaker. But I think this sentence is perfectly correct. I do not understand why you want to use "knowing"
If I have made any mistakes, please tell me about them. I need to improve my English anyway and I hope you'll help me.

    Re: is known as ??

California isn't "knowing" anything. That would be like saying "California knows the Golden State". The phrase "to be known as" means "to be commonly called".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
