Looking for a noun or an expression...

    Hi there,

I was curious to know if there's any special expression used for what I'm looking for. In some jobs, mostly the manual ones, and especially when a person is really experienced and uniquely famous for what they do, the case is they have a secret about how they do what they do or create something, which they tend to keep to themselves. Say, they train someone in their career and tell them all the methods except for one or two, because they don't want that person to gain the same expertise. This could be the case with a few other areas such as sports and food industry as well. They say McDonalds have this special ingredient or something nobody knows about. Or a coach/trainer may have a special technique their rivals can't figure out and so on.

So sorry for being wordy! Hope you can help me have the right word or expression for this 'last tip (?!)'. Thanks.

    not a teacher

These are commonly called "trade secrets". The term can be applied to all fields; trades, professions, sports etc.

Thanks! Can it also be 'the trick of the trade'?

A "trick of the trade" is usually a clever way of doing something, perhaps a shortcut of some sort, that is learned through experience. It does not usually imply any secrecy. tricks of the trade - Idioms - by the Free Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.
