    Indirect reporting of "I wish I did something".

    Dear teachers,

    I doubt whether we can report the statement "I wish I did something" as shown below, because I've never heard or read this structure.

    John (to Mary): I wish I had a car.

    Later,

    Mary (to Anne) : John said that he wished he had had (or he had) a car.

    Please explain.

    Technically, one should back up one tense in reported speech. In this case that would result in "wished he had had a car". However, if the speaker knows or has good reason to believe that John's wish continues into the present, "wished he had a car" is possible.
