Popular among or Between?

I heard "Red colour is popular among teenagers.", I don't think I heard "popular between". Why can't we use "between" in this example.

No, in this case, between does't work.

What might urge you to do so?

Popularity is a measure of how many people like something. If you're using 'between' (and hence have two people), it can only mean that both like it. I'd say, "Both teenagers like red."
Or maybe neither liked it, but between them, it was all the rage. But this is getting silly.
Although, "French is popular between Italy and Britain" makes some sense.
