    They saw

    Please would you help me with this sentence. I am not sure if I had used the correct tense.

    1.They saw their homeland being destroyed, and they felt that when the peace returned the country would never be the same again.
    Or should it be the present "returns"?
    2.They saw their homeland being destroyed, and they felt that when the peace returns the country would never be the same again.

    I prefer #1.

    #1 is correct. I'd delete 'the' before 'peace'.

    And I'd add a comma after "returned."
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
