As bhaisahab said, "trading war stories" is not a sentence - it's a phrase or a fragment. If two people trade war stories then they swap stories from their past, probably with a common theme. If it's used literally, then they are sharing stories from their time in a war.

I tell a story. You tell a story. Etc. Not selling. And not necessarily literally about war. 2 guys in the same industry might tell tales of the way things used to be, or old projects they worked on. Crazy people they worked with. Adventures they had. Not literally about war.
