    What is "a convenient pocket?"

Dear all, In the sentence below, what is "a convenient pocket"? "I couldn't balance four bags from the supermarket in one hand and pull out my house keys from a convenient pocket in the other.... Is this different form "a pocket"? Thank you! OP

Re: What is "a convenient pocket?"

In this context, it is a pocket that is conveniently situated. If you have four supermarket bags balanced in your right hand, it is very difficult to reach into the right hand back pocket of your trousers.

I just hold carrier bags — not balance them.

Some American shops still provide bags without handles.

It can't be easy to balance four in one hand, though.

Re: What is "a convenient pocket?"

You could balance them on your hand and up your arm (unlikely) or you could be trying to hold them all in your right hand (with or without handles). Whichever one you're trying to do, it's going to be difficult impossible to reach any pocket with your right hand.

However, the OP said "it's difficult to balance the bags in one hand and ... pull out the house keys in the other". I assume the second "in" should have been "with".

That leaves us considering that if the bags are in the right hand, then the person is trying to retrieve keys with their left hand. That makes the right front and right back pockets quite difficult to reach. However, the piece specifies "a convenient pocket" suggesting that the keys are actually in a convenient place. If that's the case, I don't see why they're having trouble reaching the keys at all!

You may have realised that I am now more confused than I was at the beginning.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

Re: What is "a convenient pocket?"

Dear all, Thank you for your replies. emsr2d2, you're right. "in the other" should have been "with the other". I'm sorry about that. Also, my end-of-line-key doesn't work on this site. That's why evrery sentence is in the same line in this post. I'm trying to fix it. OP
