    come here vs come to be here

    Hi,

    "That's how I came here."
    "That's how I came to be here."

    I perfectly understand the first one. Does the second one mean something different than the first?

    Yes, it could.

    "How did you come here?" - "On the bus."
    "How did you come to be here?" - "Well, it's a long story, Originally I intended not coming, but then Mary asked me ..."
    The second means, "What are the circumstances under which you came here?" and sometimes indicates surprise that the person is 'here', and it's asking for an explanation.
