    "..., stopping it frequently, .."

    Changing your life

Learning English requires action. You may know all the learning tips, but if you donít start doing things, you will achieve nothing.

    • listen to an audiobook or other recording in English, stopping it frequently, trying to understand what is being said, and trying to imitate the speakerís pronunciation

I think the Ėing form here represents a continuation action. In other words, you are going to pause on different occasions. And that is why stopping used instead of stop although no a helping verb preceded the verb stop. Or it seems to need a parallelism since what follows is trying not try. However, the line started in a bare infinitive - listen. So, Why do we have in the first place listen then trying not try. Will you help me please?

The first word is not an infinitive, it is a command -- imperative mood. The parallelism is with stopping and trying.
