    went south

One more citation from the book:
"He felt that gave him plausible denial when the outlandish initiative went south".
    And two questions:
"go south" = "go wrong" or rather "fail"?
Does the phrase mean "if the outlandish initiative went south"? (Because at this stage of the narrative it is going well).
    Thank you

    Re: went south

He knows that the initiative is certain to go wrong at some time.

    Re: went south

So it is "go wrong" and "when" instead of "if"?

When may indicate more certainty than if, but it might also be just a loose synonym here. Go wrong and fail are also loose synonyms.
