Question what does 'cross' mean ?

    Hello Teachers,
In the below sentence what doesverb 'cross' mean ?

Solar eclipses are brie moments when the Earth and Moon cross the sun 's fixed position in the solar system ...
Could you please give me the reference on Dictionary(oxford/Longman/Merriam) to match which meaning is right?

    Thanks for help.

Re: what does 'cross' mean ?

Where did you find that very dodgy definition of a solar eclipse?

    Wikipedia has a better one:

As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks ("occults") the Sun.

"Cross" as in 'traverse' or attraversare. I cross the road to get to the other side. The moon traverses the line between the Earth and the Sun.
    (I agree it's a bad sentence).

Re: what does 'cross' mean ?

I find more than one of the example sentences here unnatural/unhelpful.
