    Spending all his free-time

Spending all his free-time in the library, he continued to learn outside of class.

    What does above sentence mean?

1.By spending all his free-time in the library, he continued to learn outside of class.

    2. After spending all his free-time in the library, he continued to learn outside of class.

    3. While he was spending all his free-time in the library, he continued to learn outside of class.

    4. He has spent all his free-time in the library and continued to learn outside of class.

    Thanks

I would say #1 is the closest. #3 is not too bad (but the meaning of while can be ambiguous there). #2 and #4 don't have the same meaning as the original sentence.
